Where Are They Now?
By JoAnn Busenbark

Have you ever wondered where some of your high school classmates, sweethearts, enemies have gone over the years?

A lot of people must, because you can get on the Internet and look up anyone you want, for a price. I thought it would be interesting to explore some of those situations. Well, have I got a story for you!

Two Napa high graduates, who met, years after graduation are now big contributors to the community that supported them when they were growing up. If you are a sports fan you will remember Rick Daniels, football, basketball and baseball at Napa High School in the 70’s. Rick went on to play college football at the University of Tulsa on a scholarship. It was and still is his favorite sport. As a matter of fact, Rick continued to play, playing semi-pro ball until 2008. Yes, a recent retiree who now competes playing softball, giving his body a different set of aches and pains. Wendy Maberry, a very active young woman in a variety of sports and other activities was a cheerleader at Napa High, graduating in 1980. Wendy and Rick did not connect in high school.

When Rick returned to Napa after graduating from college, his sister set him up on a date with Wendy, and the rest is history. In 1983, Rick and Wendy got married and knew they were going to stay in Napa. Rick worked at various jobs, the longest, driving a beer delivery truck. He then decided he wanted to become a police officer. Rick Daniels now has been a City of Napa police officer for 21 years and is currently a street patrol officer. He has spent time as a school resource officer and other assignments over the years

Wendy has also worked a number of jobs after graduating from Napa Valley College, and she ended up with her own wedding cake and flower arranging business. She really wanted to do something different but was very involved with her family and other volunteer work. She had a full plate. Family responsibilities, two pregnancies. Brock, born in 1986, now a junior at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, on a football scholarship, and Bryson, 1991, a junior at Vintage High School. Wendy and Rick have done it all when it comes to coaching and volunteering. Both have coached different sports. Many of you will smile as you read this because you were on one of those teams or part of a boy scout group. Wendy was the first female Asst. Scoutmaster in our valley. She lead the Salvador Elementary School PTA for several years. When you drive by Salvador School, the trellis you see in front was one of Wendy’s projects.

Wendy is an avid gardner and always has flowers in bloom, despite the fact she is allergic to all plant materials – breaks out in hives. Wendy also led the safety patrol at Salvador for years. Rick has been asst. coach at Vintage High School for a number of years. As he goes thru withdrawals from not playing football for the first time in over 30 years he has turned to softball to fuel his competitive spirit. Wendy decided she wanted to enter police work and became a Napa County Deputy Sheriff. She is currently an American Canyon Police Officer and is assigned as the school resource officer for American Canyon.

Wendy was chosen in 2005 by the Napa Chamber of Commerce as Public Safety Officer of the year and given the same honor in 2007 by the American Canyon Chamber. She is a highly respected professional among her peers. As I interviewed this couple, Rick was the one to tell me of her accomplishments, a very proud husband. Well, there you have it. Rick and Wendy grew up here and over the years have made significant contributions to our community. Thanks to this family for enhancing our lives. Two friendly cops on the same block. Does it get any better?
